Painted Prayers: The Book of Hours in Medieval and Renaissance Art

by Roger S. Wieck

This recommendation comes from Arianwen ferch Maelgwn:

It’s an excellent book, and I would highly recommend it. The Pierpont Morgan Library Bookstore produced it to commemorate their exhibition, which just ended in January. The book is still available at their bookstore ($35 hardcover, and $25 paperback, if I remember correctly). It contains plates, almost all it color, of everything that was in the exhibit, which is substantial, and has interesting information on the uses and production of books of hours, both hand-painted and early printed forms. There is one particularly spectacular "Black Hours" painted on black-dyed vellum with the text in gold and silver ink and the illumination in mostly blue and gold--very striking on the black background. Due to the high acid content of the black dye used on the vellum, not many of these survived, and I have never seen one reproduced before.

The publisher can be contacted at:

George Braziller, Inc.
171 Madison Avenue

And Morgan de Villarquemada comments that this publisher is worthwhile even if you don’t want this book, because "They have one of the most impressive collections of overviews and specialty books you can possibly find".
