Notes on technique: AoA scroll for Brianna Ariella Durand

Size: 12x16, with borders of approximately 7/8" (top & bottom) and 1 3/8" (sides).  The paper is Aquarelle Arches, 140 lb cold press, acid-free.

Scribe:

François Thibault, 10-29 May XXXIII (plus one unpainted draft, 7-9 May, and one rough sketch, 6 May).  My third scroll.

Calligraphy:

Hand: Insular Majuscule (Drogin).  3/4 mm Brause nib.
Line spacing: 8mm.
Ink: W&N Black Indian Ink.

Illumination:

Knotwork: by the method of Meehan (Meehan 1991, Celtic Design: Knotwork).
Mazes, spirals: some from Meehan 1993, Celtic Design: Maze Patterns; others improvised based on what I saw there.
Outlining: 0.35mm Rotring Rapidoliner.
Paints: various gouaches; some W&N, some Gran d'Ache
The stream around the castle refers to one of Lady Brianna's alternate names, "Winterborn", which is a common name, in England, for a stream which flows only in the winter.  In the earlier draft, it extended down the page, flowing behind the text and over/under the border & seals; but Mistress Aldith suggested that it muddied the layout.
The arms are done as a lozenge because that's how Lady Brianna likes it.  It works well; I may suggest it to future scroll recipients.
The castle is by request.

The image has a sort of diagonal blotchiness to it; that's an artifact of the scan.
