My older scrolloids

These are some pieces I did when I really didn't know what I was doing (I was living in a place where there was nobody experienced enough to teach me). I don't really have any notes on their construction; I didn't start that until the first of my real scrolls.

But We Digress

Made for the Shire (Blak Rose, East). The shire meetings tended to ramble (of course), and the standard way to try to herd them back to the topic was to say, "But we digress". So I did this, with the intention that it could be held up to emphasize the point. I'm not sure it was ever used after the night I presented it. :-)

Certificate for an Arthurian-themed demo

Around 1995 or so, the American Library Association had a travelling exhibit called "The Many Realms of King Arthur". The Harrisburg library (where we held our meetings) had it for a month or so, and wanted to make the most of it, so they asked us to hold some demos, once each weekend for four weekends (I think). They wanted to be able to give a certificate to people who participated; this was the blank I did. (I'm not actually sure whether they ever would up presenting any certificates, though.)

Tourney prize scrolls

At the Shire's tenth birthday event, there were four tournaments: heavy weapons, rapier, archery, and games. These scrolls were for the winners. They were a collaborative effort: Lady Celine did the calligraphy, I did the borders, and I think Lord Dorian illuminated the capitals. (The exception is the archery scroll, which I did later, on my own; I think the archery tournament was a last-minute addition, so we didn't have a scroll in advance. This is also why the archery tournament is the only one that has the recipient's name on it: all the others were filled out at the event, and the photocopies were made beforehand.)

The archer in the archery scroll is aiming at a target in the margin.

Each scroll has some letters in black and some in red: the red ones form an X, for the Xth Birthday.
