John & Cynthia's Wedding

The Plan

The format of the ceremony and the party/reception will be what is loosely called "an SCA wedding."  This reflects our major hobby, the Society for Creative Anachronism, which researches and re-creates the Middle Ages.

In the Middle Ages, there were three main parts of the wedding process: the negotiation between the Households of the bride and groom, the ceremony itself, and the reveling afterwards.  We will be following this pattern.  In this case, Cynthia's Liege Lady will negotiate on behalf of her household, and the local Baron will negotiate on John's behalf.  After this, we will walk to the other end of the hall where the ceremony will take place.  A friend of ours will officiate in the ceremony.  After that, we'll have music, dancing, and dinner -- celebrating long into the night, or at least until we have to clean up!

The SCA parts are amusing theatre, but be assured that we take the ceremony quite seriously -- and we hope you will enjoy the reveling.  The pseudo-feudal relationships that the SCA echoes are a framework on which we hang our hobby activities; Cynthia and Siobhan are very good friends, and the apprentice/liegelady relationship is a term for the teaching and mentoring process they have undertaken.  Baron John Theophilous was awarded his SCA Baroncy from the King (who became king in a tournament) for being a great guy and leader of the local group.

If you have any questions about the events of the day, please do contact us.  We have found the SCA a lot of fun, and a way to meet intelligent, creative people, but we know it can seem mighty strange at first glance.

We do have one important request: please, no camcorders. We'll be sufficiently keyed up without having our every twitch immortalized. :-)
